Investors
Cohere's current valuation is about US$20 billion, the reported value of the combined company it is forming with German AI developer Aleph Alpha. That figure is nearly three times the US$6.8 billion at which Cohere raised in August 2025. The deal, agreed in September 2026, comes with a new Series E led by Germany's Schwarz Group and still needs regulatory approval. This profile explains every Cohere funding round and valuation, its revenue, the Aleph Alpha deal and what could change the number.
What is Cohere's current valuation?
As of October 2026, the latest reported valuation is about US$20 billion. On 16 September 2026 Cohere and Aleph Alpha signed a definitive agreement to combine, under which Cohere shareholders would own about 90% of the merged company and Aleph Alpha shareholders about 10%, according to SiliconANGLE, citing the Financial Times for the US$20 billion figure. The company will operate as Cohere, with headquarters in Toronto and Berlin.
Two caveats matter. First, the companies have not published the terms, so US$20 billion is a reported number, not an announced one. Second, it is the value of the combined company tied to new financing, so it should not be read as Cohere alone being worth three times more than a year earlier with nothing else changing. Still, with Cohere holding about 90% of the combination, most of that value is attributed to Cohere.
Cohere funding rounds and valuations
- 2024: a funding round valued Cohere at about US$5.5 billion, according to Bloomberg.
- August 2025: US$500 million at US$6.8 billion, co-led by Canadian firms Radical Ventures and Inovia Capital, with NVIDIA, AMD Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, PSP Investments and the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan, as reported by BetaKit and Torys.
- September 2025: a further US$100 million at about US$7 billion, according to Pulse 2.0.
- April 2026: Cohere announced its plan to combine with Aleph Alpha and a Series E led by Schwarz Group, which committed about €500 million, according to AI Magazine. Reports put the full Series E at up to US$3 billion.
- September 2026: definitive merger agreement at a reported combined valuation of about US$20 billion.
Schwarz Group, which owns the Lidl and Kaufland supermarket chains and was already Aleph Alpha's main backer, also runs a cloud business, Stackit, that is pitched as a European alternative to US hyperscalers. Its involvement gives Cohere a large European customer and a route into sovereign cloud deals.
Why Cohere is merging with Aleph Alpha
Aleph Alpha, based in Heidelberg, was once seen as Germany's answer to OpenAI but shifted toward helping governments and companies deploy AI rather than building frontier models, and generated little revenue. For Cohere, the deal adds a European base, government relationships and German-speaking talent at a moment when European governments want AI they control. For Aleph Alpha's backers it offers a stronger technology partner. TechCrunch described the combination as a bet on "sovereign AI": AI that runs on infrastructure and under rules chosen by the customer's own country, rather than relying entirely on US platforms.
Revenue and growth
Cohere said it ended 2025 with about US$240 million of annual recurring revenue, ahead of its target of about US$200 million and up from roughly US$100 million in mid-2025, when it said it had just passed that level. Those are the company's own figures. Annual recurring revenue for an AI company can move a lot with a few large enterprise contracts, so treat any single figure as a snapshot. Third-party estimates differ, and we only include what Cohere has said.
Reading the valuation
At US$6.8 billion against about US$100 million of revenue in August 2025, Cohere was valued at more than 60 times revenue. A US$20 billion combined value against about US$240 million of ARR is roughly 80 times, our calculation, before counting any revenue from Aleph Alpha. That is high for enterprise software, but below the multiples placed on the leading frontier labs. Investors are pricing in rapid growth, strategic value to governments and the scarcity of independent AI companies outside the US and China. Our guide to valuation methods explains the forward-looking logic behind multiples like these.
Overview
Cohere builds large language models and AI tools for businesses and governments. Rather than chasing consumers with a chatbot, it sells to banks, telecoms, public-sector bodies and other organisations that need AI they can run privately, often on their own infrastructure. It was founded in Toronto in 2019 by Aidan Gomez, Ivan Zhang and Nick Frosst. Gomez, the chief executive, co-wrote "Attention Is All You Need", the 2017 paper that introduced the transformer architecture behind most modern language models.
Products and customers
Cohere's main products are its Command family of models, including versions for reasoning, vision and translation, its Embed and Rerank models for search, and North, a secure workspace where employees use AI agents connected to company tools such as email, Slack and Salesforce. North is designed to run on a small number of GPUs inside a customer's own environment. Publicly named customers and partners include Oracle, Fujitsu, RBC, Bell, LG, Dell and Notion; Dell resells North on its hardware.
Competitive landscape
Cohere competes with the largest AI labs, including OpenAI and Anthropic, which also sell to enterprises; with cloud providers' own models; with open-source models that companies run themselves; and in Europe with Mistral AI, which raised at more than €21 billion in September 2026. Cohere's advantages are an enterprise-first product, private deployment and its new European footprint. Its challenge is the cost of keeping its models competitive against rivals with far larger budgets.
Canada's AI champion
Cohere has become a symbol of Canadian ambitions in AI, backed by pension funds and domestic venture firms. The Aleph Alpha deal makes it transatlantic, with a second headquarters in Berlin, which may change how it is seen in Canadian debates about keeping AI companies and talent at home. See our guide to venture capital in Toronto for the firms behind it.
What to watch next
Watch for regulatory approval and closing of the Aleph Alpha combination, the final size and investor list of the Series E, any officially disclosed valuation, revenue updates for 2026 and new sovereign AI contracts in Europe and Canada. If the deal or financing changes, the US$20 billion figure could too.
